In HARACO we have a moral obligation to strive for new technologies that will minimise emissions of toxic substances to the environment. In collaboration with the University of Bremerhaven and its Process Engineering Department, we are developing a method to recycle the Sulfuryl Fluoride fumigant with intent to reuse it, or if not possible to destroy it completely rather than releasing to the environment.
Shipping Containers are considered high-risk carriers of exotic pests and hitchhikers. Insects may occur in the cargo, on wooden packaging materials, wooden pallets and on parts of the container itself. Therefore, fumigating cargo containers is a mandatory requirement in order to prevent cross-border transport of pests, diseases etc. HARACO is an approved offshore BMSB treatment provider by the Australian Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment. Fully complying to stringent requirements, HARACO ensures highest quality results through application techniques which include Sulfuryl Fluoride and Phosphine fumigants.
In two specially designed chambers, the World’s largest enclosed facility, HARACO carries out fumigation activities with Sulfuryl Fluoride for consignments that are shipped to Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia. These chambers have the capacity to accommodate approximately 7000m3 of consignments simultaneously; an equivalent to 50 truck units. The Fumigation Operation Container (FOC), adjacent to the chambers, is equipped with all the necessary tools & equipment to perform the activities safely, on time with outstanding results.
In HARACO we are deeply conscious with the safety, health, and welfare of our employees, those directly involved with our operations, as well as people who are working in near proximity. Every employee is in possession of an Expert Knowledge Certificate, which is obtained through the participation in a course, recognised by the competent authority for the intended activity in which an examination is passed. Subsequently, each employee is granted a Certificate of Competence, by the competent authority that allows him/her to carry out fumigation activities.
For the safe performance of fumigation with toxic and highly toxic fumigants, a risk assessment is established, which is adapted to suit the respective circumstances and requirements of the individual case. It includes all risks identified to which workers may be exposed as a result of their fumigation activity.
In HARACO environment protection is of utmost importance. Our process involves the use of toxic gases; therefore, we are obliged to handle all relevant materials with care and according to statutory regulations. Toxic fumigants are stored so that they do not endanger the health of workers, other people and the environment. They are locked up and properly ventilated in specially labeled containers. In the case of Sulfury Fluoride, empty compressed gas cylinders are returned to the manufacturer/supplier for re-use.
The BMSB is a large, oval shaped insect. Its name derives from the stink defence mechanism it has to avoid predators.
The BMSB originated from Asia, but is today found in many countries around the world. Regulations apply to shipments from the USA, Italy, Germany, France, Russia, Greece etc. Australia and New Zealand are the main countries which are concerned with possible entry of the Bug and therefore have implemented stringent regulations with importing of goods from threat nations.
The BMSB poses great risks to agriculture, cargo and shipments. It is not, however, dangerous to humans.
All treatment providers must be registered and approved under specific regulations. The methods are Sulfuryl Fluoride fumigation & Heat treatment.
